Cowboy Kate & Other
Stories
by Sam Haskins
Book Description: London: Corgi, 1968.,
1968. Unpaginated with black/white photos, softcover. Cover slightly
yellowed, and some slight yellowing into page area, apart from that in
good condition.
Haskins' seminal sixties classics, which include the groundbreaking
Cowboy Kate, are landmarks in the history of photography, as revered
today as they were when first published forty years ago. In Cowboy Kate,
a lyrical tale of the triumph of youth played out by cowgirls of the old
west, Haskins reinvented the genre of the nude with stunningly
well-executed photographs, a cinematic approach, and a subtly engaging
narrative. Often copied but rarely equalled, Haskins has an exceptional
ability to photograph women with a sensitivity that has won him
accolades from men and women alike.
Note: The cover illustration is not from the copy
for sale, which is identical apart from the logo in the bottom right.
(There is no logo on the copy for sale.)

London, 1872
by Gustave Dore
Not a book, but a slip-case with 12
illustrations printed from woodcuts by Gustave Dore (prolific
illustrator of Dante's Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise).
The slip-case is 36.5 by 26cms and beautifully printed by Solarbest
Limited of London. There is no publication date although it does look
circa 1930's.
The illustrations themselves are on heavy paper with a linen backing,
and are slightly smaller than the slip-case. There is a 13th
illustration on the inside front cover (see image) which is the full
size of the page, but the print quality is not quite so good as the
individual prints.
From similar work seen in antique shops, mounted and framed the 12
linen-backed illustrations could fetch well in excess of £40 EACH!
Image from the inside cover of
the slip case. 'Father Thames'
